RANDY JULIUS
Randy Julius of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is an avid outdoorsman who spends much of his time in the fields and woods, or on the water, gathering reference material and ideas for his work.
In addition to painting, he also expresses his outdoor interests through photography and writing. Randy is a member of the Outdoor Writers of America and is currently the president of the New England Outdoor Writers Association. He writes a weekly outdoor column for The Enterprise of Brockton and lectures on a variety of outdoor subjects.
In 1991 and in 2005 he was selected by Ducks Unlimited to design the New England Sponsor Print. He has also painted the design for the Massachusetts Waterfowl Stamp seven times, winning the competition in 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1992 and 2000 and 2006.
Other prints by Randy Julius include the 1981 Massachusetts Archery and Primitive Arms stamp, and the First of State Massachusetts Wildlands Stamp featuring a ruffed grouse.
ABOUT THE ARTIST Barry Julius (b. 1969)
Barry Julius, grew up in East Bridgewater, Mass. and entered his first painting in the state waterfowl stamp competition at age 12. Today he is a well known wildlife artist.
Julius studied advertising art and design at Massasoit Community College in Canton. He taught art for many years and now serves as a recreation officer for the Massachusetts Department of Correction. Julius, an avid outdoorsman, also works as a freelance artist. His artwork reflects his longstanding interest in hunting, fishing and wildlife.
In addition to winning the contest for the 2009 Waterfowl Stamp, Julius also won the 2009 Primitive Firearms and Archery competitions, thereby becoming the first artist to sweep all three state stamp competitions. Previously, Julius won the 1995 Archery/Primitive Firearms stamp competition, the 2001 Waterfowl Stamp competition, and the 2002 Archery Stamp competition.
Julius lives in Brockton with his wife Jen and their two sons, Brian and Ben. He has illustrated two books and his paintings hang in numerous private collections.
ABOUT THE DECOY
This white-winged scoter decoy was carved by Capt. Samuel A. Fabens (1814-1899) of Marblehead, Mass. The decoy features an oversized keel designed to keep it from overturning in the rough waters off the rocky coastline of Marblehead. Capt. Fabens worked for most of his life as a ship captain. He made his first voyage as cabin boy on a ship, which was owned by his father. Later in life, he was the skipper of the clipper ships Golden Eagle and Challenger. After his sailing days were over, he served as a trial justice and was known as Judge Fabens.
His decoy fame rests on a rig of scoters with the name S.A. Fabens branded into the underside. One of these decoys was featured on the 1984 Massachusetts Waterfowl Stamp.Capt. Fabens is also known to have had a rig of mergansers, and there is a goldeneye that historians say appears to be his work. Little else is known about his decoys or carving history.
